Lofi Beats is a concept app that combines mood-based playlists with Pomodoro timers, designed to support focus and relaxation. Users can also experiment with creating their own lofi tracks. The interface features a soothing, “lofi” color palette in both day and night modes, paired with friendly typography and intuitive layouts. Developed as a UI/UX study in Figma, the project explores how thoughtful design can enhance usability while reflecting the calm, creative spirit of the lofi music genre.

I surveyed and interviewed fellow students about how they use music while studying. The responses were consistent, lofi wasn't background noise, it was a deliberate ritual to shift into a focused headspace. Two journey maps revealed where that ritual broke down: once during playlist selection, overwhelmed by too many options with no way to preview mood or energy, and again mid-session when a wrong track pulled them out of focus entirely.
Three findings shaped every design decision:
80% of users switched apps at least once during a study session
Track-skipping mid-session was the most common focus-breaking behavior
No existing app connected music mood to time of day or task type
The "DIY LoFi" feature which lets the users transform favorite songs into lofi versions is very unique yet currently the least developed. I'd go deeper on it: what does the transformation feel like, how much control does the user have, and how does a newly lofi-fied track feed back into their playlist. That one feature could shift the app from a focus utility into something genuinely personal. I'd also run usability testing on the core loop, mood selection to playlist to timer, to validate that the three pillars work together as seamlessly in practice as they do in concept.
